SEOUL -- A South Korean official revealed Tuesday to The Yomiuri Shimbun that Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, is pregnant. However, the official gave no further information about the source of this information.
South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported the same day about Kim's pregnancy, adding that Kim Jong Un's dispatch of his pregnant younger sister as a special envoy to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang may indicate that he wants to accelerate improved relations between the North and South and make a breakthrough regarding sanctions.
Kim's sister is the first vice director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea. She visited the South from Feb. 9-11 as part of a special delegation from North Korea. Each day of her trip was filled with such activities as conversing with South Korean President Moon Jae In and watching a nighttime performance.
South Korea's intelligence agency reported that Kim was about to give birth to a child in April 2015. If so, this would be her second child.
The intelligence agency believed Kim's husband to be a former university classmate of hers.
