Kim Jong-un portrait: North Korea leader gets 'first official painting'

North Korea has unveiled a portrait of Kim Jong-un, thought to be the first official painting of the country’s leader.

The portrait was on display at Pyongyang International Airport alongside one of Cuba’s president Miguel Diaz-Canel as he arrived in the country for a state visit.

Experts say the move marks a significant change in Kim Jong-un’s leadership, representing him as a leading figure.

Peter Ward, a North Korea pro analyst told NK News: “It appears that Kim Jong Un is now getting a portrait for display in public. This is important as it symbolically makes him equal to his father and his grandfather in this area.

Portraits of his father and grandfather are a propaganda staple in North Korea, hanging in every household and public space.

The picture shows a smiling Kim in a formal suit and tie.

The portraits are created by Pyongyang’s Mansuade Arts Studio and their presentation is strictly governed.

Cuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel and Kim Jong-un have agreed to expand and strengthen their strategic relations following their meeting in Pyongyang.

He was met by Kim at Pyongyang International Airport on Sunday with the pair riding into the city past flower-waving and cheering crowds.

According to North Korea’s state media, the talks proceeded in a “comradely and friendly atmosphere.”

Later this week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the North’s main negotiator Kim Yong Chol will meet in New York.
