Former presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced her endorsement for Kim Foxx Tuesday, saying the first term Cook County prosecutor is a “national model” for criminal justice reform.

“State’s Attorney Foxx, in spite of swimming against the current of a system that is still slow to change, has bought bold and historical change to the Cook County Criminal Justice system,” the California senator said in a statement.

Foxx is “righting the wrongs of the failed war on drugs in expunging low-level marijuana convictions, leading the nation in exonerating the wrongfully convicted, and reducing mass incarceration by prosecuting on violent crimes instead of over criminalizing non-violent low-level offenses,” said Harris, the former district attorney of San Francisco and former attorney general of California.

Harris’ endorsement of Foxx follows endorsements from presidential candidates, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., also formally announced she would back Foxx last week.

Foxx, in a statement Tuesday, described Harris as “an inspiration” and “mentor.”

“She reminds us that justice and equality are always on the ballot. I am proud to have her standing with me,” Foxx said.
