Kilwinning Rangers No 2 Gavin Friels praises side's attitude as players take on demands

Gavin Friels praised Kilwinning’s character after they wiped the floor with Winton Rovers to reach the second round of the South Challenge Cup.

Saturday's 7-0 thrashing saw Ally McColm hit a 10-minute treble with Calvin Kemp (2), Thomas Collins and David Ramsay also on the scoresheet.

And Buffs No 2 Friels, who took charge as manager Chris Strain served out a one-game suspension, reckons Buffs' attitude was spot on.

He said: “It could have been tricky going in against a team from a lower league but we showed a wee bit of class.

”We’re trying to push the boys to play at the same level every week regardless of the opposition so that when we go into the bigger games we’re ready.

“It's all about keeping that standard and we scored two or three cracking goals.

“I thought we played really well. We had plenty of chances. I think the supporters probably got their money’s worth.”

Friels reckons Kilwinning have yet to fully hit their stride.

He added: “We had a wee sticky patch and it might have been down to the number of games we were playing.

“You don’t get boys in for training to work on things so we’re still finding our routine. We’ve been working hard in training in the last two weeks because we know we’ve big games coming up.”
