Kilwinning Rangers keeper Adam Strain relishing battle with David Markey for No1 jersey

Veteran goalkeeper Adam Strain has seen and done it all in 20 years between the sticks.

But the dawn of a new era at Kilwinning Rangers is set to throw up a fresh challenge for the 38-year-old.

Having made the No 1 jersey his own since joining the club for a second time four years ago, Strain’s place in the team is seriously under threat.

The summer arrival of David Markey from Darvel means the gloves are well and truly off in the fight to be first pick.

It’s an unusual situation for Strain, widely regarded as one of the top keepers in Junior football, to find himself in.

He’s been top dog throughout his career at clubs including Auchinleck Talbot, Beith, Troon and senior outfit Queen’s Park.

And he’s not quite ready to relinquish his place just yet as he enters his footballing twilight years.

“The difference between David and the other keepers who’ve been here is he’s used to being a number one,” said Strain.

“I never take anything for granted and I know it’s far from certain I will be starting the season.

“The two of us will be pushing each other hard and competition like that is healthy.

“Physically, I think I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been. I believe I’ve got another two or three years in me.”

As the elder statesman of a youthful squad, Strain is relishing the extra responsibility a senior role demands.

He said: “I started my Junior career here as a 17-year-old, so I know what it’s like to come to a club as a young guy.

“There will be a bit of a spotlight on us this season but I can see us doing alright. Fit teams tend to do well in this league and we should have plenty of legs in the team.

“We’ve lost a bit of experience in defence but guys like Tommy Maitland, Jamie Whyte and David Syme are solid, strong and learning all the time.”
