Kilwinning Rangers boss Chris Strain explains decision to sell defender in midst of injury crisis

Kilwinning Rangers boss Chris Strain has defended his decision to sell defender Tony Coutts in the midst of an injury crisis.

Coutts, 22, completed a shock move to Lowland League side Broomhill this afternoon, ending a 16-month stint at Buffs Park.

The transfer comes just days after Strain admitted squad reinforcements were a must – particularly at the back – and 24 hours before Kilwinning host Benburb on West of Scotland League Premier Division duty.

But the Buffs boss today insisted it was the right move for all concerned as he revealed transfer monies will be used to bolster the squad..

Coutts was sent-off in his last appearance for Kilwinning in last Friday night's 2-0 home defeat against Hurlford United.

Strain said: "David Gormley [Broomhill manager] has been interested in Tony for a while and it's a move that suits all parties to be honest.

"Tony gets to make a step up and test himself in the Lowland League and we will look to reinvest the money in the squad.

"It doesn't affect the injury situation in terms of tomorrow's game because Tony wouldn't have been part of the match day squad due to suspension.

"We have the grace of an extra week to bring in reinforcements and we're working very hard to do so."
