Kilwinning Rangers 5 Royal Albert 0 as Chris Strain hails flowing football in cup rout

Kilwinning Rangers cruised into the second round of the Kilmarnock Pie West of Scotland League Cup after crushing Royal Albert at rain-swept Buffs Park.

David Anderson's stunning curling finish from the edge of the box broke the visitor's early resistance in 17 minutes.

Ally McColm added a second two minutes later with a low, drilled shot from a tight angle that went through the Albert goalkeeper's legs.

David Ramsay missed an absolute sitter, then had a headed effort ruled out for offside as Kilwinning laid siege to the Albert goal for a third.

Further chances came and went in a totally one-sided first half but the home side couldn't add to their tally before the break.

However it took them just seven minutes into the second half to get back on the scoresheet when Ramsay side-footed a loose ball home from 10 yards.

Number four arrived just before the hour mark, Ricky Hanvey tucking away a penalty with aplomb after referee John McKendrick spotted an Albert hand ball in the box.

The rout was complete 10 minutes later when substitute Carlo Monti fizzed a free kick into the net from 20 yards.

West of Scotland Premier Division outfit Kilwinning were strong favourites to progress against an Albert side cut adrift at the bottom of WoSFL Conference B.

Kilwinning boss Chris Strain acknowledged as much in his post match comments. But he was still delighted with his side's performance.

He said: "There was a wee feel-good factor about today.

"You don't want to get too carried away because we should be taking care of the opposition with due respect to them.

"But the boys moved the ball about brilliantly. It was on the deck a lot of the time and there was a lot of one-touch, two touch passing.

"They worked hard too and that's the main thing."
