Kilwinning eco-village plan for Hazeldene site to be explored by council

Plans to create an eco-village in Kilwinning are set to be explored by North Ayrshire Council.

Councillors are expected to approve plans to undertake a feasibility study on the potential of the ‘village’ in Blair Road at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, September 27.

Land earmarked for the potential project has been vacant since 2019 when the Hazeldene Centre and operations moved to the Trindlemoss facility in Irvine.

Council officers have undertaken an options appraisal for future use of the site, with the preferred option being the creation of an Eco Village, through a partnership arrangement with a private sector contractor.

If the project is shown to be viable, it would see the construction of a small number of eco-friendly houses, incorporating the the latest low energy and sustainability technology.

The council say the aim would be setting the highest standard for attractive and modern net-zero carbon houses for the future.

Any proposals coming forward would be subject to local consultation and require a planning application.

After completion of the study, officers will report back findings to the council’s Cabinet for discussion and agreement on next steps.

Councillor Scott Davidson, Cabinet Member for Place, said: “A great deal of work has been carried out by officers to explore potential uses for this site.

“We look forward to seeing whether an eco-village is viable and something that we can move forward with as we continue on our net-zero journey.”
