Kilwinning chief recognised as spotlight falls on grassroots heroes

Kilwinning Rangers chairman Colin Boyd has been crowned the best volunteer in adult football as part of MailSport’s tribute to our grassroots heroes.

Now in its 17th year, the Scottish FA Grassroots Awards presented by McDonald’s and the Sunday Mail celebrate those who are vital to football in their local community.

The winners are being shared throughout this week before MailSport exclusively reveals the big one, the merit winner, in this Sunday’s newspaper.

Boyd, chairman of a club that has moved from the junior ranks to the West of Scotland League this season, has been in the hotseat for the past three years.

And he’s been instrumental in the Buffs’ shift from Abbey Park to a new home at Kilwinning Sports Club, bolstering links between the senior side and the youth set-up within the community.

He said: “I can’t take all the credit for what I have done, I have a massive team of people who help me.

“I don’t expect anybody ever to come down and pat me on the back and say I am doing a good job.

“I just do it because I love doing it. I love doing it for the club, I love doing it for the kids at the sports club – I want them to have the best facility they can have for the next 20 or 40 years. That is why I do it.”

Deveronvale were crowned the best community football club in Scotland on Monday and St Johnstone ’s Saints in the Community picked up the professional club equivalent.

Milngavie FC have won the award for best para-football project, while Carol Baxter of the Aberdeen & District Juvenile Football Association took home the best volunteer in youth football gong.

And 17-year-old Jack Tindal has been named best young volunteer for his tireless work coaching, balancing his college commitments with guiding kids every spare minute he has.

All the winners will feature in this week’s Sunday Mail.
