Kilwinning Academy vocational projects will boost pupils' core skills

Kilwinning Academy hosted the launch of two innovative projects.

Staff, parents, carers and partners were invited to the launch of bike maintenance workshop Tyres and Wires and KA Allotments.

Pupils will run the projects as micro businesses, providing services and produce to the community.

Walter Smith from Prince’s Trust said: “Employers are looking for young people who have the core skills known as the 6 Cs – confidence, communications, commitment, customer services and customer care and courtesy – and we can categorically say that these projects are developing these and other employability skills.

“Surveys conducted amongst young people have indicated that the lack of confidence is one of the biggest problems they face.

“There have been various debates in the media, discussing the need to develop confidence in our school pupils and give them the ability to interact with adults in preparation for joining the workforce.”

Claire Baird from DYW Ayrshire and Aaran MacDonald MSYP attended the event and formally opened the projects.

The projects are delivered in partnership with Ayrshire College, who provide the vocational training.
