Kiltwalk Edinburgh 2019: Route map, entry details and transport information ahead of huge fundraiser

Thousands of fundraisers will kit themselves out in their favourite tartan and march for good causes when the 2019 Edinburgh Kiltwalk takes place this month.

The event will arrive in the city on Sunday, 15 September with three separate walks – a 24-mile Mighty Stride, a 14.5-mile Big Stroll and a five mile Wee Wander.

Walkers will raise cash for a good cause of their choice, however charities Team Jak Foundation, Alzheimer's Research UK, CHAS and Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity are the chosen 'pit stop partners' where you can stop for some refreshments and encouragement along the way.

So far in 2019 Kiltwalk events have taken place in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee, with Edinburgh the final stop for the tartan-clad fundraisers.

Last year more than 20,000 walkers helped raise £3.6 million for more than 1100 charities across Scotland, with a 40 per cent top-up by The Hunter Foundation taking this to more than £5 million.

Sir Tom Hunter and The Hunter Foundation ensures that each Kiltwalker's fundraising receives an extra 40 per cent donation.

So what's the route this year?

Kiltwalkers taking part in the 24-mile Mighty Stride will set off from Holyrood Park, head out east towards Fisherrow Links in Musselburgh and then onto Portobello promenade. Walkers will then go along Seafield Road East and Salamander Street before heading through Leith. They'll then go along the Water of Leith and round towards Victoria Park. The final eight miles takes participants out to Lower Granton Road, along to Gypsy Brae, through Silverknowes and Davidson's Mains before heading south to where the race finishes at BT Murrayfield.

Those taking part in the 14.5-mile Big Stroll will instead start out at Fisherrow Links while participants in the five-mile Wee Wander kick-off their journey from Gypsy Brae.

Are entries still open?

Yes, you can certainly still get involved in the 2019 Kiltwalk. Organisers say it's set to be the biggest ever in Edinburgh, and 9.30am Mighty Stride, 10.30am Big Stroll and 12.30pm Wee Wander are already full, but there is still plenty of room in the other slots.

Entry to the Mighty Stride and Big Stroll is £31.69 per adult/child while for the Wee Wander it will cost £12.80 per adult and £6.50 per child. Under 5s will go free.

What about transport on the day?

Special buses will be running to the starting points and from the finish line at BT Murrayfield, and you can book them now. According to the Kiltwalk website there are seven buses running throughout the day, priced at £5 each.

There will be post-walk buses at 2.30pm, 3.15pm, 4.30pm and 6.30pm, and buses heading to each of the three walks in the morning.

The Mighty Stride walks start at 9.30am and 10am, The Big Stroll sets off at 10.30am and 11am, and the Wee Wander takes place at 12pm and 12.30pm.
