Kilmarnock Viaduct to become rainbow railway line thanks to £213,000 investment

Iconic Kilmarnock Viaduct is set to become a rainbow railway line thanks to a new £213,000 colour changing light plan.

The B-listed bridge could glow red and green as well as the current cool blue as part of a mission to replace all the bulbs.

The structure has been casting a blue hue in tribute to the town’s heritage for over a decade.

But now the lights desperately need replaced.

An inspection has revealed the equipment is “obsolete” which causes maintenance problems. Ayrshire Roads Alliance head of roads Stewart Turner said the team plan to install new colour changing LED lights.

They will cost £213,000.

Mr Turner said: “After a recent inspection of the existing lighting by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, a decision was taken to design a replacement system that would make future maintenance of the lights more efficient and economical.”

He added: “At the moment, the way the lights have been cabled makes it difficult to replace individual lamps which can lead to a whole system failure.

“The alliance will now adopt the whole system and will install new colour changing LED lights.”

The circuits would be controlled above ground and cabled in parallel to allow individual lamps to be replaced.

A partnership between East Ayrshire Council, Network Rail and the Railway Heritage Trust saw the introduction of the blue lights – back in 2008.

Councillors are due to vote on using money from the local authority’s renewals and repairs fund to pay for the for the new lights at cabinet this week.

The viaduct was built in the 1800s and sits in the conservation area of the town.
