Kilmarnock v Ayr United: Ayrshire Derby set for full house as Nicola Sturgeon lifts restrictions

The Ayrshire Derby will go ahead in front of a capacity crowd next month.

Nicola Sturgeon has scrapped the 500 limit on spectators as of Monday, January 17, meaning Kilmarnock v Ayr United on February 9 will be played in front of a full house.

Killie's clash at Partick Thistle this weekend along with Ayr v Morton will still be limited to the 500.

But Scottish Cup clashes the following weekend – Killie v Dundee United and Ayr v St Mirren – will have no crowd restrictions.

The announcement will also be welcome news to Auchinleck Talbot who are gearing up to face Hearts at Beechwood Park on the same day, and Darvel fans will be free to travel to Arbroath.

The news comes as the First Minister announced that hospital numbers may be slowing down.

She told MSPs: "While the number of people in hospital with Covid has continued to increase over the past week - putting significant additional pressure on the NHS - there are signs that the rate of increase may be starting to slow down.

The number increased from 594 two weeks ago to 1,147 this time last week– an increase of 553. Since then, it has risen further to 1,479 - an increase of 332."
