Kilmarnock town centre bins to be hidden inside containers featuring iconic images

Bin containers covered in pictures of iconic Kilmarnock scenes could be placed around the town to make streets more attractive.

East Ayrshire Council has applied for planning permission to put more than a dozen large lockers in the town centre to hide unsightly bins.

The move comes after community concerns about problems with bins.

The council said a “collection of bins on the corner of Bank Street and College Wynd, for example, was detracting from the beauty of one of the town’s most iconic streets.”

Feedback also revealed the lockers would be useful in Sandbed Street to stop rubbish overspilling into Kilmarnock Water.

A council spokeswoman said: “The idea behind the bin locker initiative is to improve the appearance of areas where bins of various shapes, sizes and colours sit out on the street due to a lack of internal storage.”

The proposed locations are: Cheapside Street, Low Church Lane, Bank Street/College Wynd, the lane next to the bank building, Nelson Street and Sandbed Street.

The bin units would feature the Burns Monument and other images according to photographs submitted with plans.

The spokeswoman added: “The bin lockers are designed to house all bin sizes up to and including 1,280 litre (large four-wheeled bins).

“They are secured via a locking system and can be accessed by both the business operator and the contracted waste collection provider. The lockers feature high-quality, customisable images allowing them to blend in and be sympathetic to their surroundings.”

The council’s outdoor services team have made the containers.

And officials in the council’s waste management, regeneration, planning and roads teams have found potential spots for them.

The council spokeswoman said: “Recent engagement with businesses who will benefit from the bin locker initiative was positive and engagement with them will continue.

“If the scheme proves to be successful, officers will look into other locations for the bins to be sited in the town.”
