Kilmarnock thug who strangled his partners to be sentenced at High Court

A Kilmarnock thug who violently attacked three of his ex-partners – leaving one of them unconscious – has been remitted to the High Court.

Cameron Johnston was found guilty of 16 charges of sickening domestic abuse by a jury at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last month.

Johnston’s behaviour involved strangulation, attempts to gouge out the eyes of one of his partners and holding a knife to her throat.

Most of the crimes were committed behind closed doors at addresses in Kilmarnock and Troon, South Ayrshire.

His three victims bravely recounted their abuse for the court during the trial.

Appearing back before Sheriff Shirley Foran, Johnston was told his fate would be decided by the High Court in Glasgow.

Sheriff Foran described Johnston’s violence towards the women as “forceful and unprovoked” and said it would be a “disservice” to pass sentence in Kilmarnock.

She said: “Perhaps the most serious violence caused loss of consciousness. There seems to be a clear pattern of behaviour.

“All of these women are left with emotional and psychological scars.

“I consider it my duty to reflect the gravity of each offence for each victim.

“To carry out my duty I would be failing if I sought to contain my sentencing within the five years bracket. I would do a disservice to the public in that respect.”

Johnston will be sentenced at the High Court at a later date.
