Kilmarnock thug stabbed man to death during phone call with his lover

A thug stabbed a man to death during a phone call with his lover.

Gary Muir, 39, murdered Alan 'Cat' Jamieson, 38, Kilmarnock on September 18, 2022.

Girlfriend Angela Sawyers heard "rustling" before Mr Jamieson told her: "I've just been stabbed - he stabbed me in the jugular."

Muir pled guilty today at the High Court in Glasgow to murdering Mr Jamieson.

The court heard that Muir was in a long-term relationship with Miss Sawyers which ended in January 2021.

Mr Jamieson entered a relationship with Miss Sawyers for a year up to his death.

The hearing was told that Miss Sawyers believes Mr Jamieson had become suspicious about her rekindling a relationship with Muir.

Prosecutor Gregg Farrell said: "At around 8pm, Muir stabbed Mr Jamieson on the neck with a knife while the deceased was on the phone.

"In the course of the call, Miss Sawyers could hear 'rustling' down the line.

"She shouted for a response and heard Mr Jamieson say 'I've just been stabbed - he's stabbed me in the jugular'.

"She asked who stabbed him, and Mr Jamieson replied 'Gary'."

Mr Jamieson tried to speak but was not clear due to gurgling blood.

Mr Jamieson was heard to state: "I'm dying" before being found and tended to by neighbours.

Muir later spoke to Miss Sawyers' sister and told her: "It was me that done it."

When asked what he meant, he replied: "Stabbed Cat."

A knife containing DNA of both men was found the following day on a grass embankment underneath a bridge.

Mr Jamieson was taken to hospital meantime where it was discovered he had a wound to an artery with a depth of six to seven centimetres.

Despite being treated, Mr Jamieson died six days later with the cause of death being "stab wound of neck."

Jennifer Bain KC, defending, told the court Muir did not wish to harm Mr Jamieson that day.

She said: "There was mutual animosity as the deceased previously violently assaulted Mr Muir.

"The deceased suspected Mr Muir was rekindling the relationship with the former partner who is his partner.

"He wished me to express to the court and next of kin his sorrow at the consequences of his actions."

It was revealed that Muir has 26 previous convictions notably a High Court matter for an assault to danger of life which he received a sentence of almost four years.

The judge handed Muir a life sentence with a minimum punishment period of 14 years and eight months.

Lord Weir said: "This was a vicious futile assault with a knife with fatal consequences with him passing away six days later.

"The victim impact statements from Mr Jamieson's family show the difficult the death has had upon them.

"The sentence cannot alleviate the pain of the loss of a son, father and partner."
