Kilmarnock Thomas Cook to close later this week

A Kilmarnock travel agent will close for the final time later this week.

Thomas Cook, which employed five people, is the latest retailer to vacate the town’s high street.

Bosses say they took the decision because the King Street store’s lease is expiring.

Of the five people employed at the shop, four have been made redundant and one has been redeployed.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that the tour operator was in talks over a £750m rescue deal that would hand control of the package holiday business to a Chinese investor.

The proposed deal with Shanghai-based conglomerate Fosun, will also whittle down its £1.6billion debt mountain.

A Thomas Cook spokeswoman told the Standard: “The Thomas Cook store in Kilmarnock store will be closing on July 24.

“All of our customers will be advised and can still use Thomas Cook at their nearest store which is in Rivergate, Irvine.

“The Kilmarnock store is due to close as the lease is expiring.

“We continually review our store network to make sure we have the right stores in the right places according to changing customer needs.

“We continue to support the store team and have tried to redeploy as many as possible to other stores.

“Unfortunately some of the team members will be redundant when the store closes.”
