Kilmarnock prison inmate tests positive for coronavirus

A prisoner in Kilmarnock has tested positive for coronavirus.

The affected man is currently in isolation in his cell and is being kept away from other prisoner s.

Staff are said to be following guidelines about keeping their distance but relatives of other prisoners say it has not yet been locked down and visitors are still allowed in.

Earlier this week we told how two men were quarantined with suspected cases of coronavirus.

The men were put into isolation and have been monitored by medical staff.

The private prison, which is run by Serco, is not currently isolating other prisoners but are monitoring the situation.

However a relative of a prisoner inside the Bowhouse jail told the Daily Record: "Two staff were also very unwell last Thursday and were booking visitors in.

Visits are still going ahead today (TUES).

"There is no hand sanitiser available for the prisoners or their visitors. They are not isolating prisoners either which is bad for those with underlying health problems."

The relative added: "The prisoners are saying another man might have it as well but they were allowed to mingle with others before being sent down to the halls.

"Also when prison officers are completing pat down searches they should be changing their gloves in between prisoners which they are not and there is nothing at the finger scanning points for prisoners and visitors to clean the screen with after someone else has used it."

Kilmarnock has 500 cells with a population of around 692 prisoners.

Pamela Swan, Deputy Director at HMP Kilmarnock said: “One of the two prisoners who were suspected of having COVID-19 has now proved positive.

"He has been isolated in his cell and is being cared for by NHS Ayrshire & Arran, our healthcare partner.

"We are now waiting for further guidance from the NHS as to the next steps that we need to take and we will take  every measure possible to keep our staff and prisoners safe.”
