Kilmarnock opticians set sights on future after business awards success

A Kilmarnock opticians has picked up a prestigious business award.

Urquhart Opticians was handed the 2020 Ayrshire Business Excellence Award at the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner.

Along with William Duncan & Co and Merck, the independent optometry group had been shortlisted for the unique accolade following a highly rigorous and lengthy application process which required applicants to evaluate their own business and performance – with six judges visiting Urquhart’s flagship Kilmarnock outlet.

Established over a century ago, Urquhart Opticians was bought in 2014 by business partners Peter Telfer and Alistair Duff. Since then, the size of the team has grown to 24 and turnover has more than doubled.

Mr Telfer said: “The Ayrshire Business Excellence Award requires one of the most thorough and rigorous application processes we’ve seen, delving into every aspect of the business, our ethos and our drive.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be honoured in this way and are delighted to be flying the flag for both optometry and retail in such esteemed company.”

Mr Duff added: “When Peter and I first took on Urquharts, we had an ambitious vision for patient care, customer service and business practice.

“Thanks to our amazing and dedicated team, we’ve been able to realise this, and this award is very much a recognition of all the hard work and dedication of every team member.”
