Kilmarnock neighbours rail against plan to build home on estate's spare strip of land

Kilmarnock neighbours have railed against a bid to build a home on a spare strip of land in the middle of a housing estate.

A proposal to build a new house on Wallacetown Avenue in the town's Southcraigs estate has been met with numerous objections.

The plan to build a detached two-storey villa and double garage has been submitted by Neil Hood of Stewarton.

If approved, Mr Hood's home would be based on a currently unoccupied 1,631 sq. m patch of land that surrounds existing homes on the estate.

In a letter to residents, the applicant says the plans have been submitted by his newly-formed company – Hood Property.

Mr Hood said he initially considered building multiple dwellings on the site but decided that one single family dwelling would be "more appropriate".

One objector, Morag Kerr, said the street is already congested and even more traffic would be "horrific", she said.

Ms Kerr goes on to write: "My husband and a few of my neighbours work for the emergency services doing shift work.

"There would definitely be an impact on them doing their job to the best of their ability if they were unable to sleep during the building work.

"The grass area is used regularly by dog walkers and for other recreational purposes. Wildlife also frequents the area."

Mrs Lorna Stewart wrote that she can't "think of any valid reasons for the construction of a house in this location" and also raised fears over parking and construction traffic.

She added: "There is no need for any more dwelling houses to be built in this area especially on what was green belt."

Miss Karen Marshall argued that the construction of a house would alter the "safety and function of the area significantly."

She added: "There are houses in the surrounding area available for sale without the need to build another on this scenic, green area of land, in close proximity to other residential properties.

"The driveway proposed to exit at the parking bay is an unsafe location, and this bay is frequently very busy, which is a common issue in Southcraigs, with lack of parking and open space being problematic."

Mr Hood days that his proposals are "designed to fit in with the neighbouring houses in terms of style and materials used."

He goes on to say that a new footpath will be created to the side of the site so that the junction towards Wallacetown Avenue/Southcraig Drive can be easily accessed.

He also says that visitor parking bays will be maintained so there is no impact on provision of parking.

East Ayrshire Council planners will rule on the application at a future date.
