Kilmarnock motorists face disruption as suspected gas leak closes road

A suspected gas leak has closed one of the main roads in Kilmarnock this afternoon.

Bonnyton Road has been shut at the Bonnyton Cafe while workers deal with the issue.

One local told the Kilmarnock Standard: "My daughter was driving through the area a bit earlier and thought she could smell gas."

The incident comes as Scottish Water carry out major work in the area as part of a £5 million project.

Four-way temporary traffic lights are in place from 7am to 7pm each day at Bonnyton Road and its junctions with Warwickhill Road and Stevenson Street.

Drivers had already been warned to face delays and disruption with people coming into the town from the Western Road particularly affected.

A post on East Ayrshire Council's Twitter page read: "Please note [that] due to an emergency, Bonnyton Road (at Bonnyton Cafe), Kilmarnock has been closed. Please avoid the area and seek an alternative route until further notice."
