Kilmarnock man puts Christmas lights up early – but for a very good reason

A Kilmarnock teenager is bringing some much-needed light to the town in these dark times.

With the last eight months dominated by coronavirus and lockdowns, Jordan Buckland is eager to spread some festive cheer.

The 19-year-old has decked his house out in Christmas lights despite the festive holiday being more than a month away.

And to cap it all off, the thoughtful Shortlees Crescent resident is hoping the spectacle will raise vital cash for a local charity.

Speaking to the Kilmarnock Standard, Jordan said: “I really wanted to do this quite early just because of everything to do with Covid in 2020 after what’s been a terrible year.”

Many residents have already flocked to Jordan’s house after he installed the lights last week.

The festive light show includes Santa in his sleigh, a Christmas tree, a penguin, a snowman and lights on the roof.

Jordan says he’s chosen CHAS (Children's Hospices Across Scotland) as the beneficiary of the fundraising.

A collection bucket has been left at his fence for anyone who wishes to contribute.

And after a nightmare year which has seen hundreds of people die of coronavirus in Ayrshire and many more lose their jobs, Jordan says that his decorations have been raising a smile.

Because of the pandemic, many people across the country have put their Christmas decorations up a bit earlier this year to spread festive cheer.

“A lot of people have been really pleased to see it after the year we’ve had – it’s put a smile on their face,” Jordan added.
