Kilmarnock man 'given chance' by sheriff as he avoids jail for abusive behaviour

A Kilmarnock man who phoned police after banging on the windows and doors of a house he was locked out of has appeared in court.

Craig Kooi had attempted to collect belongings from a family member but was turned away due to being intoxicated.

Outraged, Kooi began banging on the door before calling the police.

But the 44-year-old ended up being charged after his threatening behaviour was observed by the police who arrived on the scene.

Kooi, of McKendrick Place, appeared in Kilmarnock Sheriff Court where he admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner on October 27 at an address in the town.

The prosecutor told the court: “He left the property and then returned about eight minutes later, repeatedly banging on the door and window, shouting and swearing.”

Defending agent Neil McPherson told the court: “He made a real nuisance of himself .”

Sheriff Alastair Watson said: “I was thinking there was no alternative but to send you to prison and that’s not gone away but I’m willing to give you a chance.”

Kooi was released on bail and will be sentenced in four months time.
