Kilmarnock man caught wandering streets with Stanley knife

A man was caught walking along a busy Kilmarnock street with a knife.

William Townsley was found on Hill Street after members of the public called police with concerns about a man carrying a sharp object.

Townsley, of Dungarvel Road, Kilmarnock, was arrested following the incident on Saturday.

He was remanded in custody to appear in court on Monday, when he pled guilty to having a knife in a public place.

The court heard how at around 10.10pm police received information that Townsley was making his way towards Black’s Bar.

They traced the 48-year-old on Hill Street in the town centre.

The prosecutor told the court: “He was asked if he had anything sharp and he held out a Stanley knife.”

Townsley’s agent told the court: “When the police stopped him he was fully compliant.

“There was no good reason for him to have the item but he accepts having it.”

Townsley was sentenced to 80 hours of unpaid work.
