Kilmarnock man caught growing cannabis avoids jail 'by skin of his teeth'

A Kilmarnock man who was caught growing 10 cannabis plants has been told he avoided jail “by the skin of his teeth”.

Daniel Hyslop, 38, pled guilty at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court to producing the Class B drug on April 26.

His lawyer told the court: “He clearly realises that this is a serious matter which should never have happened.”

Hyslop, of Stronsay Place, was told by Sheriff Alastair Watson: “The question is whether I’m going to send you to prison today given the level of cultivation of the cannabis.

“I’m just persuaded, and only just, not to send you to prison today. It’s by the skin of your teeth.”

Hyslop was placed under a restriction of liberty order for six months, ordering him to remain at his home address between 7pm and 7am each night for first three months and 7pm to 7am on Fridays and Saturdays for the remaining three months.

He was also placed on a community payback order with 160 hours of unpaid work to be carried out.
