Kilmarnock firms land deal to head up historic building's restoration

Two Ayrshire firms have been appointed as the main contractors to carry out work on Maybole's historic town hall.

Peter Drummond Architects and TCS Construction Consultants have been unveiled as the businesses who will be spearheading the building's restoration.

The news is being viewed as a "major step forward" in the redevelopment of the high street.

A spokesperson for the Maybole Regeneration Project said: "We are excited to announce that Peter Drummond Architects and TCS Construction Consultants have been appointed for the works on Maybole’s town hall.

"The Town Hall is one of the main priority buildings for the project, so this appointment is a major step forward in the redevelopment of Maybole High Street."

Peter Drummond Architects, in Kilmarnock, have more than 20 years’ experience, specialising in heritage and conservation work.

The firm also carried out work locally on James Miller’s iconic Turnberry Hotel, they've redeveloped an important 18th century townhouse in Ayr and been involved in restoration works at St Meddan's Church, Troon.

Peter Drummond said: "I’m delighted to be appointed to the town hall project. I have been involved in many works around North Carrick and wider Ayrshire, this project is a tremendous opportunity to restore an important historical building."

Peter Drummond Architects will be working closely with TCS, a Kilmarnock-based consultant, that will be providing the quantity surveying services to the Town Hall project.

A spokesperson for the Maybole Regeneration Project said: "The town hall is an iconic building with a rich history and a community hub for Maybole residents.

"The aim of our work is to preserve it for the future generations of Maybole whilst making it a more attractive venue for a wide range of different uses."

Last year, Ayrshire Live told how the Maybole Regeneration Project was awarded a National Lottery grant of £1.670 million for the regeneration of the town’s high street.

The project, a partnership between Maybole Community Council and South Ayrshire Council, aims to transform the appearance of the high street, improve shop fronts, restore historic buildings including the Speakers, the town hall and the castle; widen the pavements, cycle paths and install traffic calming measures.
