Kilmarnock fans raise huge lockdown sum as extent of fan backing laid bare

After pledging money to the club during the Scottish football shutdown, Kilmarnock fans have so far handed over more than £70,000.

Football across the SPFL has been shut down since early March due to the coronavirus pandemic, with clubs struggling due to a lack of gate receipts.

While Premiership clubs will be allowed to train from next week, the top flight is not slated to return until August 1.

The Killie Trust via its 'Trust in Killie' fundraising campaign has been making monthly donations to the Rugby Park side in an attempt to mitigate the cost of the shutdown.

And with another £7,000 handed over for May the total now stands at £72,800.

A number of subscribers have increased the amount they give each month to try and help their club through a difficult time.

The total given to the club by fans is over half the projected cost if all season ticket holders were to ask for refunds for the 2019-20 campaign.

Killie this week pledged to refund supporters in cash for the value of matches missed, but laid bare the financial impact of doing so.

A statement said: "We’ve looked at a range of options but the simplest solution is to offer the option of a refund to our 2019/20 season ticket holders for the value of the matches missed.

"Should every season ticket holder take up this option then we calculate the financial cost to the club will total £142,000.

"We want to make this clear – there will be no judgement or condemnation of any supporter who wishes to take up this option.

"Some supporters have already indicated to us that they don’t wish any money back and we thank them wholeheartedly for this kind gesture."
