Kilmarnock car traders supplied dangerously damaged campervan to a customer

Traders at a Kilmarnock-based used car dealership who supplied a dangerously damaged campervan to a woman have been fined thousands of pounds.

Andrew McColm and Dean Ritchie pleaded guilty to the offences of supplying and advertising the campervan at James Little Street Cars when they appeared before the town’s sheriff’s court last week.

Ritchie, 41, of Midton Road in Ayr, South Ayrshire admitted that he supplied a campervan on March 24, 2017 to a woman which he knew, on the basis of information in his possession, was dangerous.

The vehicle was deemed unsafe due to a gas fire capable of leaking combustible gases, a gas fridge capable of venting combustible gases and a broken leaf side spring.

Ritchie also pleaded guilty to contravening the requirements of professional diligence by advertising the campervan for sale online and describing it in very good condition.

McColm, 57, of Mount Avenue, Kilmarnock, admitted to one charge of advertising the campervan which was falsely described as being on very good condition and that everything should work as it should.

However the interior of the vehicle was water damaged, the appliances were not functioning, the gas flue was blocked, the water tank had a hole and the gas fire and fridge were capable of producing combustible gases.

Sheriff Shirley Foran ordered both Ritchie and McColm to pay £5750 in compensation to the customer. They were also each fined £1000 by the court.
