Kilmarnock Buckfast lout shouted abuse at partner before drink driving

A Kilmarnock man who shouted abuse at his partner before getting behind the wheel of his car while four times the limit has appeared in court.

Sean Lafferty called his partner a “slut” and said she could not love him “because she did not do as she was told”.

He then left the house in his car after consuming over two bottles of Buckfast and other alcohol before being stopped by police.

Lafferty, of Clark Street, pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards his partner on January 17 at an address in Newmilns.

He shouted and swore, uttered offensive remarks and threatened self-harm.

The 27-year-old also admitted driving while having four times the legal amount of alcohol in his system on the same date.

The prosecutor told the court how the woman had returned home from her work where Lafferty told her he had drank two bottles of Buckfast.

Se noticed that he was “clearly drunk” and told him that she was going to bed.

Lafferty followed her and sat on the bed where he said he “could not live without her”.

The fiscal depute said: “The accused’s mood then changed and he told the complainer that she could not love him because if she did she would do as she was told.

“He then began shouting in her face calling her names such as ‘slut’.”

At this point, the woman told Lafferty to leave her alone and he left the bedroom and went into the living room.

When the woman asked what he was doing, he responded: “Let me do this after I do phone my family and tell them”.

The prosecutor told the court that the woman “took this to mean that the accused was going to attempt to self-harm”.

Lafferty started to shout and swear in the woman’s face and she went back into the bedroom to call police.

She heard him leave the property at this point and saw him get into his car.

Despite shouting at him not to drive, due to his level of drinking, Lafferty drove away in his car.

Lafferty was later stopped nearby by police who were en route to attend his partner’s phone call. He failed a roadside breath test.

He was taken to the police office and the “usual procedures were carried out”.

Lafferty’s defending agent Paul Gallagher said he would reserved any comments until reports have been prepared.

Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane deferred sentencing until March 25 and disqualified him from driving in the interim period.
