Kilmarnock boss Tommy Wright slams 'cowardly' yobs who stoned team buses after Ayrshire derby triumph

Tommy Wright has labelled the yobs who stoned Kilmarnock's team buses after their dramatic Ayrshire derby victory as 'cowardly' – and revealed they were targeted before the game as well.

The Rugby Park chief has spoken for the first time about Tuesday night's unsavoury incident in Ayr as the players and staff were leaving Somerset Park following a last-minute 1-0 win.

Wright was on the coach which had a window smashed while the other bus was hit but no windows were broken.

The Killie buses were targeted in an area known as White City around 10.18pm. The club has notified police of what happened and vowed to assist with their investigation.

No players or staff were injured but Wright branded the incident 'scary' and told how he suffered similar encounters, when he was younger, coming home from Northern Ireland international matches.

Wright said the buses were directed away from their normal route on leaving the stadium – and that he thought it was his window which had been struck by a brick.

“Everyone is fine thankfully," he said at a press conference looking ahead to Saturday's cinch Championship clash with Queen of the South. "It was quite scary I must admit.

“It’s cowardly and it shouldn’t have happened.

“I have been a victim of it when I got the bus home from Northern Ireland games when I was younger and the buses used to get stoned.

“I actually thought the brick had hit my window and I was at the front of the bus, but it actually hit the very back window. But the noise was that loud I thought it was mine.

“Luckily, there are two parts to the window and the inner bit didn’t smash otherwise someone could have been seriously hurt.

“It was the two buses stoned. We were stoned on the way in after the team got out of it.

“We had two players who weren’t stripped for the game and they were still on the bus.

“Then there was the incident after the game. We went a different route as the police told the driver they were waiting for us on our normal route."

Wright insists those responsible for carrying out the acts need to assess their own behaviour.

He added: “It shouldn’t happen and the people who did it should take a long hard look at themselves and decide if they want to support their team by throwing stones at a bus?"
