Kilmarnock and Ayr United in SPFL postponement request as rivals unite to ask for derby to be pushed back

Kilmarnock and Ayr United have approached the SPFL to ask for their match to be pushed back to allow more than 500 fans in for the derby.

The Ayrshire rivals are scheduled to meet on January 2 in the standout Championship fixture of the festive period.

The Premiership derby games scheduled for that date have been moved back, with Celtic to face Rangers on February 2.

The Dundee derby and Hearts vs Hibs have also been moved after the winter break was brought forward in light of new restrictions.

In the second tier there is no break, however, and despite Killie proposing a suspension of the season the clubs as a collective opted to play on.

It was reported on Thursday that they would approach Ayr about potentially moving the Ayrshire derby to allow fans into Rugby Park.

And the Honest Men are on board as the two clubs have approached the governing body to ask for a postponement.

Killie announced in a statement: "We have made a joint approach with Ayr United to the SPFL to postpone our Championship match, scheduled for January 2, 2022 until a date where more than 500 supporters can be permitted entry to the stadium.

"We will provide an update on this request as soon as we can."

The last meeting between the two at Rugby Park with no restrictions in place came in the Scottish Cup in 2009 and attracted a crowd of 11,563.
