'Killing per se is not murder': Soldier pleads not guilty after stabbing ex-wife

Police investigating the scene of crime in Upper Coomera in 2015.

A soldier has admitted to killing his ex-wife and her partner on the Gold Coast while their five-year-old child was in the home, but denies it was murder.

Christopher Robert Carter pleaded not guilty to murdering Renee Carter and Corey Croft in their Upper Coomera home in January 2015, on the first day of his trial in the Supreme Court in Brisbane.

The couple's bodies were discovered by a female relative.

Prosecutor Glen Cash told jurors they would hear an audio recording between Carter and police where he admitted to stabbing the pair.

"I went there to f***ing talk to her and she came at me with a knife," the court heard Carter said.

"I took the knife off her... she was telling me she was going to kill me.

"I stabbed him as well."

Defence lawyer David Brustman said his client did not deny he killed the pair.

"No issue whatsoever that this man killed the two deceased," he said.

"Killing per se is not murder."

Mr Cash said the five-year-old child did not witness the stabbing but "found that knife near his mother's body and moved it into the sink".

He told the jury it would be evidence the pair suffered significant injuries to their necks and a high volume of blood was found at the property.

The court heard there was friction between Carter and his ex-wife because Mr Croft had a conviction for a serious offence involving a different child.

The trial is expected to run for two weeks.
