Police respond to incident in London
(Picture: Metropolitan Police)Police have launched a third murder investigation in seven hours after a pensioner was beaten to death in a night of bloodshed across London.
Police were called by paramedics who discovered a 74-year-old man with head injuries at an address in Wild Goose Drive, Lewisham at around 5am on Friday.
Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he was pronounced dead an hour later.
A 23-year-old man known to him was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.
He remains at a south London police station and police are not looking for any other suspects.
Four hours earlier, a young man was shot dead outside a north London Tube station.
The victim, in his 20s, collapsed at a bus stop opposite Turnpike Lane station around 1.10am.
Local residents told how they heard a “bang” followed by screaming and shouting.
An eyewitness said: “Paramedics came and were trying to save him. His mum came to the scene. She was wailing — it was horrific.”
There have been no arrests and enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.
Just before 10pm on Thursday, a woman in her 40s was stabbed to death in south London.
Police were called to reports of a disturbance at a residential address on Park Road, Cheam.
A man known to her was detained nearby after the first call to police.
He was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains at a south London police station.
Detective Inspector Steven Keogh, from Specialist Crime South is investigating the Lewisham pensioner’s killing.
He said: “At this very early stage we retain an open mind as to the circumstance surrounding this death, but I can confirm that we are not seeking any other persons in connection with this isolated incident which involved one victim.”
A crime scene remains in place and officers remain on scene.
