Epic and Steam have almost joined forces for this, as they move to the make game cross-play compatible to ensure the player base isn't divided between the two platforms.
To this end, if you send an invite to one of your Steam friends, they will be able to join your lobby regardless of the version you own.
You'll be able to use cross-play with your friends by enabling 'Steam to EGS' option when loading into the main game. You will have to sign in to your Epic Games account to do this.
If you have the game on Steam, there will be an update available at some point today to enable the cross-play feature.
