Actor Sandra Oh once said she wanted to “live” in the vaginas of her co-stars, according to Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
The admission came in response to a “love letter” from Waller-Bridge, who writes the BBC America series Killing Eve in which Oh stars.
The writer opened up about the candid exchange and Oh’s response in an interview with Elle magazine.
“She wrote back to me and said, ‘I want to talk about your heart, your vagina and your ideas. When I work with women, I want to live in their vagina for the year.’
“I was like, ‘the door is wide open, Sandra, please come running in’.”
Oh won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Drama at this year’s ceremony for her role in the BBC show.
The series sees a cat-and-mouse narrative unfold between serial killer Villanelle (Jodie Comer) and British intelligence agent Eve Polastri, played by Oh.
Killing Eve has been widely praised for subverting stereotypical gender roles, something which Waller-Bridge touched on in her Elle interview by describing an exciting “feminine energy” on set.
The magazine also features an interview with Comer, who describes working with Oh, Waller-Bridge and actor Fiona Shaw as “special”, explaining how they encourage one another and make each other laugh.
The 25-year-old Liverpudlian actor also touches on insecurities she had as a teenager with regards to her weight and body image.
“What I’m trying to do – and I feel like I’m succeeding a little bit in – is to be accepting of the fact that… I always put a stress on myself having to look a certain way,” she told the publication, “when you are who you are.
“Your ability to act, or whatever your job is, is worth so much more than how you look.”
