Killing Eve finale: Eve's fate 'revealed' in tiny clue that fans missed

Warning: Spoilers for Killing Eve season 2

The season 2 finale of Killing Eve ended with a bitter confrontation between cat and mouse Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer).

As Eve brutally rejected Villanelle's scheming and murderous ways once and for all (until next time anyway), Villanelle shot the subject of her obsession, appearing to leave the MI6 agent for dead.

Fans will be clamoring to know what happens next, but did the last episode provide a clue to what really happens to our heroine?

In one of the scenes for the episode You're Mine, a conversation took place between Eve and her boss Carolyn Martens (Fiona Shaw) in her hotel room, after which Carolyn left.

There was a gap before Eve then left the room to aid Villanelle - could the MI6 agent have placed that bulletproof vest on before leaving with the assassin and having their confrontation in the ruins of Ancient Rome?

This would certainly easily explain how Eve could survive such a dangerous wound too.

Alternatively, some will have noticed that comments made earlier in the episode by Eve's college Hugo - who was also left in critical condition after a gunshot wound - could have foreshadowed her own fate.

Hugo pretended to be dead so he would then be left alone by his assailant and could survive. So is Eve actually just playing dead

Or if Eve survives is it just because Villanelle wants her alive?

And if so, is their twisted romance really over with?

Killing Eve seasons 1-2 are available on BBC iPlayer. Season 3 will air in 2020.
