Killie loan star says Airdrie's play-off destiny is in their own hands

Kilmarnock star Kyle Connell says Airdrie's Championship play-off destiny is in their own hands as they prepare for a semi-final second leg crunch against Cove Rangers at New Broomfield tomorrow night.

The sides are locked at 1-1 from Saturday's clash at the Balmoral Stadium, when Callum Gallagher's deflected cross gave the Diamonds the opener, only for former Airdrie star Leighton McIntosh to level from close range.

Whichever side emerges from New Broomfield with the win will progress to face either Montrose or Morton in the final to see if they can earn promotion.

Connell, who sent a lobbed effort just wide of target in the last of the 90 minutes, told Airdrie's website that the team weren't at their best at Cove.

He said: "It was a bang average game, and it’s fair to say we didn’t play to our full potential.

"A draw is better than a defeat, but we had chances to win the game too. Hopefully on Tuesday we’ll be able to take those chances.

"Playing at home is always an advantage, and if we’d been able to have fans in it would have given us more incentive to win our biggest game of the season.

"Hopefully we can get the result we want on Tuesday and, all being well, we can welcome some fans in for the final."

Connell admits Airdrie are up against a talented side in Paul Hartley's Cove, who are looking to seal triple back-to-back promotions, but says they will only worry about their own performance.

He said: "Cove are definitely a very decent side - they didn’t get into a play-off position out of luck.

"We just have to worry about ourselves, and about making the game our own. It’s a 90-minute match where the winner takes all, so that’s what we’re focused on.”

Midfielder Euan O'Reilly faces a late fitness test, while defenders Harlain Mbayo and Joshua Burke are out.
