Killie Boxing Day clash crowd restrictions are a blow for Hamilton Accies

Hamilton Accies chairman Allan Maitland admits the club are bitterly disappointed by the Scottish Government's decision to impose crowd restrictions of 500 from Boxing Day, which will cost them thousands from their Championship clash with Kilmarnock.

Crowds have been restricted to that number for three weeks from Sunday, in a bid to reduce rising numbers from the Omicron strain of Covid.

But Maitland says the club accept the decision and back First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The New Douglas Park club had sold corporate hospitality for the game and expected a big travelling crowd from fourth-placed Kilmarnock.

Maitland said: "Nicola has a tough job trying to do the right thing - no matter what she does it's a difficult shout.

"I understand the need to have a break in the spread of the virus, I understand the pressure it's putting on the emergency services, and if the people leading the country decide that's the right way forward, then obviously we have to accept that and agree with it.

"But it's a massive impact; this Sunday, Boxing Day, we had sold great corporate hospitality for the game, we had a big away support coming, and all of that is going to have to be refunded.

"It's a huge amount for us, in terms of the actual day, so we're bitterly disappointed by it.

"There's absolutely nothing we can do, we just have to get on with it. It's like everything else - it's a blow, there's nothing we can say or do about it, it's just one of these things.

"Safety is of paramount importance and if you look on it any other way then you would be considered to be selfish.

"This is a time for trying to make sure we do the right things and get a break in this virus if it's at all possible."
