Killer who beat wife to death after she mocked erectile dysfunction found guilty

A man who bludgeoned his wife to death with a crowbar after she mocked his erectile dysfunction has been found guilty of murder.

David Pomphret, 51, denied murder on the grounds of a temporary loss of control which happened during an argument.

But a jury at Liverpool Crown Court found he murdered his wife Ann Marie, 49, on November 2 last year.

The computer expert is now facing a life sentence for murder after being "undone" by a speck of blood on his sock.

The court heard Pomphret, described as a "quiet man who snapped", attacked his wife in a "frenzied" attack with a crowbar during an argument about DIY in stables where they kept horses.

He admitted striking Ann Marie 30 times over the head with a crowbar near their home in Winwick, Cheshire.

The jury heard Pomphret had suffered erectile dysfunction and simply "flipped" after his "ranting" wife called him "limp and useless" and slapped him.

It came amid abuse over their 22-year marriage from his "volatile" wife who was autistic and had a borderline personality disorder, the seven women and five men on the jury heard.

He admitted manslaughter but denies murder on November 2 last year, on the grounds of a "special defence" of a temporary loss control and told the jury he had no recollection of bludgeoning his wife.

Pomphret burned bloodstained clothes, disposed of the murder weapon, protested his innocence and was released on bail - but did not destroy his socks, which would "come back to haunt him".

He dialled 999, saying he had found his wife lying in a pool of blood, "very dead", adding: "There is brain and blood everywhere, and it looks like she has had her head beaten in."

Pomphret denied that he planned the murder and then tried to cover his tracks.

The Barclays Bank IT worker was re-arrested after police found his wife's "airborne blood" on his socks, a "huge mistake" putting him at the scene of the crime.

He then had to change his story, the jury was told and admitted manslaughter, tearfully telling the jury he "killed the woman I loved".

Pomphret still denied murder, instead he claimed a "special defence", blaming his wife's behaviour for a temporary loss of control.

He even told the jury at Liverpool Crown Court: "One of Marie's favourite TV programmes was CSI and one of the things they always said is you can't get rid of blood."

But he was convicted of murder by the jury today following a ten-day trial.
