Investigators are still awaiting autopsy results to confirm the cause of death of a convicted killer found dead in his Melbourne prison cell.
Scott Alan Murdoch was found inside his single-inmate cell at the Melbourne Assessment Prison on April 19 this year.
Murdoch was sentenced to life behind bars in May 2020 for the 2013 murder of Melbourne mother Kylie Blackwood and a knife attack that left elderly widow Ilona Prohaska seriously injured.
Ms Blackwood was stabbed more than a dozen times in the head, neck and chest by Murdoch, who broke into her Pakenham home.
Her twin daughters discovered her body after she missed the school pick-up.
Murdoch was ordered to serve at least 36 years before becoming eligible for parole. With time served his earliest release date was not until 2051, when he would have been 74.
His death in custody is required to be investigated by the coroner.
A pre-inquest hearing on Tuesday heard Murdoch was located by prison staff during observation rounds, and they confirmed he was dead before entering his cell.
An autopsy has been conducted but results were not yet available, meaning toxicology results and his medical cause of death couldn't be revealed, the court heard.
Coroner Katherine Lorenz made orders that the Department of Justice hand over copies of Murdoch's extensive medical files as well as recordings of telephone calls made to and from Murdoch in prison.
A coronial brief will be put together by August 17 with another hearing to follow after that date.
