A Ugandan man who killed one of the country's most famous silverback gorillas has been jailed for 11 years.
Felix Byamukama admitted entering entering Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, and killing Rafiki, 25, an endangered silverback mountain gorilla.
Byamukama calimed he had entered the wildlife reserve to kill smaller animals and had only killed Rafiki in self-defence.
An autopsy showed Rafiki had been killed by a sharp object. He was one of just over 1,000 mountain gorillas left in existence.
Rafiki went missing on June 1 of this year, and his body was discovered by park rangers the next day.
He was the leader of a group of 17 mountain gorillas living in the park.
Byamukama also admitted killing a small antelope and a bush pig.
He faced a life sentence had he been tried in a special wildlife court.
However, the killer will instead serve several lesser jail sentences concurrently, totalling 11 years.
