A killer who stabbed a man to death over a petty argument and then claimed self-defence has been jailed.
Reece Williams, 29, was knifed to death as he walked away from a fight with Robbie Munoz, 22, he thought was over.
Witnesses described how Williams had been the one to approach Munoz first and the pair had an argument before Williams punched him.
As Williams turned his back to walk away, Munoz took a 25cm knife out of his rucksack, chased Williams and stabbed him several times.
William’s friends tried to save their friend but were unable.
Munoz was found close to the scene suffering a single stab wound. But witnesses told police Munoz had been injured by the knife during his frenzied attack.
He was arrested and later charged with murder.
During trial, Munoz claimed he acted in self-defence.
DCI Chris Wood, who led the investigation, said: “Reece’s death tragically illustrates the awful consequences that carrying weapons can bring.
“What started off as a petty argument led to one man being murdered and another spending a considerable amount of time in prison. Our thoughts remain with Reece’s family and friends who have been left devastated by his death.
“Our investigation made it very clear that Munoz had no qualms about carrying a knife or using it against anyone who got in his way.
“It took just seconds for him to take another life and that is why our top priority continues to be identifying those who carry weapons and are intent on causing violence.”
Munoz, of Belmont Road, Wallington, was sentenced to life with a minimum of 22 years at Woolwich Crown Court on Thursday.
