Killer flash floods rip up motorways and delay Running of the Bulls in Spain

At least one person has been killed in flash flooding caused by torrential downpours in northern Spain.

Firefighters were sent to rescue residents in the northern town of Tafalla as the heavy rainfall led the river Cidacos to burst its banks, ripping up a major motorway.

Four times more rain than what was forecast has hit the region in the last few days.

Footage on social media shows the highway cracked and tilted as the floodwaters gush across it, in Pueyo, on Monday.

Rescuers found a body of a man who was believed to have been swept away by the fast-flowing floods in his car.

Shocking social media videos showed strong currents dragging vehicles rubbish containers and household items under the murky water.

There were reports of power outage in the affected regions, according to local media.

The government of the Navarra region said a major railway line had been disrupted after the unexpected rainfall.

Further north in Pamplona, the city's famous Running of the Bulls festival was suspended on Monday due to the torrential rainfall.

The intense weather came just a week after Spain underwent a record-breaking heatwave that engulfed parts of western Europe.

Temperatures soared into the 40s across the continent leaving dozens dead from heat stroke.
