Kill The Bill protest set for Leeds Millennium Square this weekend with disused toilet and piñata

The next Kill The Bill protest in Leeds will take place this weekend.

ACORN Leeds have announced they will be protesting outside Leeds’ Civic Hall in Millennium Square on Saturday at 12pm.

The community union, which is made up of 350 members, is demanding local MPs and councillors actively oppose the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts bill.

The bill details more than 300 pages of draft legislation, including a section on public order and protests , and will allow police to take a more proactive approach in managing protests that are causing serious disruption.

The group says the protest will include chants, speeches, a ceremonial destroying of the bill.

They will have creative demonstrations, such as breaking a bill-themed piñata and throwing the bill into a disused toilet, in the hope to communicate their message in an impactful way.

The group said on Saturday they will be calling on the city council, whose main office is located in Millennium Square, to write to the government as a "core city to publicly oppose the bill and use their power to fight it, through their vote and their voice".

They added that members will also write to MP’s and other elected representatives to seek public support for their demands.

ACORN also stated it believes the bill impairs their ability to create meaningful change to improve lives.

Last month, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Leeds city centre to hold a peaceful demonstration against the bill.
