Kill the Bill campaigners march through Liverpool city centre

Protesters demonstrated in Liverpool city centre today against plans for a controversial police bill.

The rally was held to counter the police, crime, sentencing and courts bill, which would give the police new powers to shut down protests.

Those involved held placards bearing messages including 'Kill the Bill' and 'Noisy Protest is a Human Right'.

Ahead of the demonstration a spokesperson for Kill the Bill Liverpool told the ECHO they believed police "do not make us any safer and this bill will only empower them to bring more harm to us and our communities, by expanding stop and search, criminalising trespass, and criminalising protest".

The Kill the Bill protest was one of several public gatherings organised in the city centre on Saturday, with people also coming together to mark International Workers Day.

The Kill the Bill spokesperson said its members were in "full solidarity" with their cause: "While our march is specifically to protest the bill and the harmful effect it will have on people and communities, we are in full solidarity with the events focused on around worker liberation and labour struggle on International Workers Day, as we ourselves are workers."

The Kill the Bill event organisers distanced themselves from an anti-vaccine demonstration that was also held in the city centre today.

Those behind the Kill the Bill protest said they supported mask-wearing and social distancing as part of efforts to keep people safe.
