Kilkenny priest leaves parishioners laughing with hilarious joke as he gives insight into his coronavirus life

Kilkenny priest Fr Martin Tobin continues to cheer up his parishioners with his daily masses and occasional "smart comments".

The Mooncoin parish priest is "busier than ever" with many of his colleagues in the diocese of Ossory either cocooning or off ill.

The popular priest enjoys giving the odd joke or comment during his masses and his quip went down a real hit on Saturday.

While broadcasting weekend mass via webcam the priest said: "Does anyone know if we can have a shower now? Or are we just to keep on washing our hands!"

Fr Martin said he is struggling without a congregation as he gets no response or feedback from masses.

The priest also admitted the joke wasn't wholly original and was sent to him via Whatsapp.

The 59-year-old told the Irish Mirror: "That joke was a WhatsApp one, it was one of the best I've heard in a while now so I had to share it.

"I find it very difficult these days not getting responses back, one person said to me recently I usually have a smart comment at the end of mass but with the current situation you don't get any reactions so can't tell if it went down like a lead balloon.

"I did get a few texts about this one so I knew people enjoyed it."

The parish priest said the novelty of online masses has now worn off and he's looking forward to when he can welcome people back into churches.

He said: "It's getting a bit tiresome now, at the beginning it was novel but now it does get tiresome.

"I'm busier than ever as I'm the only one in the parish at the moment, a lot of my colleagues are cocooning or ill so there's just 16 priests in a diocese of, the Politicians tell us, 12,500 people.

"I was tested last week along with those in our nursing home and I and everyone came back clear.

"I have to be really careful because with so many other priests unable to say mass at the moment I need to stay standing and keep it going."

Fr Tobin is looking forward to churches being allowed reopen on July 20th in phase four but is hoping what they have to do will become clearer.

He added: "There is stuff being put in place at the moment, I would like to know more about what they expect us to do when we reopen.

"I heard they might have to sterilise the whole place between masses which would be a big ask. I don't think they have to do that in supermarkets even.

"The next few weeks will tell a lot."
