Joey Holden has become the latest Ballyhale Shamrocks man to bring the curtain down on his Kilkenny career.
The 31-year-old retires having won All-Irelands in 2014 and ‘15, the latter as captain, five Leinster titles and a pair of Allianz Leagues. He was chosen as an All Star at full-back in 2015.
Just last Sunday he picked up his eighth Kilkenny SHC title with Ballyhale, with whom he also won All-Irelands in 2010, ‘19 and ‘20.
Holden’s announcement comes on the back of his clubmate Colin Fennelly confirming that he will not be making himself available for selection to county boss Brian Cody again after sitting out the 2021 campaign, which saw Kilkenny retain their Leinster title but fall at the All-Ireland semi-final stage once again as they lost to Cork after extra time.
Holden, who didn’t feature in any of Kilkenny’s three Championship games this year, confirmed his retirement on his Twitter, saying it's “time now to bring an end to my time with Kilkenny”.
He added: “Many great memories, especially the honour to represent Ballyhale and Kilkenny in lifting the Liam McCarthy. Thanks to all who have helped along the way, now onto the next chapter.”
