Kilkeel Harbour death sparks police probe

Police have launched an investigation into the sudden death of a man in Kilkeel Harbour, Co Down .

Officers were called to the scene on Monday evening and the circumstances are now being investigated by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

It is believed the man who worked as a skipper was from Scotland and had travelled to Northern Ireland with a crew for boating repairs, when he slipped and fell.

A rapid response paramedic and the charity air ambulance were dispatched to the scene and initial treatment was given.

The nature of his injuries are unknown.

The Chief Executive at Northern Ireland Fishery Harbour Authority expressed his condolences over the "very sad accident".

He added: "It is a great tragedy. We extend our sympathies to the family of the man and the crew involved.

"It is a very sad accident and happened very suddenly."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police were called to the sudden death of a man aboard a vessel in Kilkeel Harbour on Monday evening. The circumstances of the death will be investigated by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch."

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 16.32 on Monday 29 April 2019 relating to an incident at the Harbour, Kilkeel.

"NIAS despatched one Emergency crew and one Rapid Response Paramedic to the scene. The Charity Air Ambulance was also despatched to the incident.

"Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, no one was transferred to hospital."
