Kildare won't let 'Newbridge or nowhere' become their legacy insists Eoin Doyle

Eoin Doyle says the current Kildare team are determined that “Newbridge or nowhere” won’t be their legacy.

Kildare had two landmark victories in particular to savour last summer, one in the boardroom over the GAA and then that which followed in St Conleth’s Park against Mayo.

But Doyle, the team captain, says the players want to be remembered for more than just a one-off victory.

He explained: “I’ve been asked this question a lot and it was great and all, but all we did was win a Championship game and that’s not diminishing anything we did.

“We’d never beaten a big team like that but the Kildare players don’t want to be remembered for winning one Championship game at home in front of their own crowd.”

They face Longford in Tullamore tomorrow still dogged by inconsistency, which was evident again in a nervy two-point opening round win over Wicklow which ought to have been far more comfortable.

Doyle added: “I don’t know why it’s not there. Hopefully that bit of consistency will come. We’re being trained and coached and our backroom is preparing us in the best possible way as players.

“We need to take responsibility to make sure we’re turning up and putting in the best performance we can.”

VERDICT: Kildare
