Kilbryde Hospice fundraisers honoured with Heart of Glasgow award for entertaining community during lockdown

Well-known entertainers Robert and May Miller have been presented with Heart of Glasgow awards in recognition of their tireless fundraising for the Kilbryde Hospice.

The big-hearted couple were nominated by staff at the East Kilbride-based hospice who explained that Robert and May regularly give up their time for charity and have raised an incredible £130,000 for the hospice over the last eight years.

Pre-COVID, the couple organised hugely successful annual charity events ‘The Gay Ball’ and ‘Lads and Laddies’ on behalf of the hospice, as well as volunteering to entertain at Kilbryde Hospice’s many balls and ladies’ lunches.

And the kind couple didn’t stop fundraising during the pandemic.

Glasgow Credit Union (GCU) runs the awards.

David Ross from the from the organisation told Lanarkshire Live : “What really impressed us about Robert and May was the way they adapted to continue to fundraise throughout lockdown.

"Each week they hosted online live performances for their followers to watch and donate. This not only raised funds, but also boosted the spirits of the local community."

Kilbryde Hospice provides specialist palliative care to patients over the age of 18, with life limiting progressive illnesses. When fully operational, the hospice costs around £2.6m per year to run.

The Heart of Glasgow awards were launched last year by Glasgow Credit Union to recognise individuals who have given their time and effort to make a positive difference in the Greater Glasgow area.

The couple were honoured at a ceremony attended by Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Susan Haughey, CBE – who is also a trustee of Kilbryde Hospice.

Expressing her thanks on behalf of all at the hospice, Lady Haughey said: "We’re delighted that GCU has chosen Robert and May for this award.

"They have kept us all entertained and with a smile on our faces during such difficult times, and are truly deserving recipients."
